Price traps and marketing: “AI PCs”, gaming badges and other buzzwords

How to tell when you are paying for a sticker instead of real performance.

“AI PC” and NPU

The “Copilot+ PC” badge requires a 40+ TOPS NPU, but real local apps using the NPU remain niche. Do not pay 20–30% more for an “AI PC” sticker unless you have a specific local AI workflow. The same jobs are usually handled by the CPU/iGPU.

“Gaming” badges on weak hardware

A manufacturer can label a laptop “Gaming” while pairing it with an 8 GB VRAM card, single-channel RAM and a TN panel. Check the specs, not the shell.

When to buy

  • Avoid purchases during GPU price surges (20–40% above MSRP).
  • Right before an architecture refresh (“SUPER”, new generations) prices depreciate fast.

Refurbished and used hardware

Certified-refurbished business laptops (ThinkPad, Latitude, EliteBook) can beat new budget consumer models: sturdier chassis, better keyboards and panels at comparable prices.

Rule of thumb

Base decisions on real benchmarks and specs, not brochure buzzwords. Avoid “AI” premiums, verify the MPN and compare the price against current MSRP.
